Nine Weeks

Nine weeks of no riding at all is the longest I’ve ever gone without getting on a horse since I was twelve.  It felt even longer because the last few times I rode, I was nine months pregnant.  The very last time was just days before The Baby was born.  He was late and I figured riding might inspire his appearance.  At that point, riding was really more like sitting since I could really only walk and do a few minutes of trotting at a time.

It felt really nice to be on Sadie’s back and to get to canter again… except for the fact that I could tell just how much muscle we’ve both lost.  OK, mostly how much muscle I’ve lost.  I tell my students all the time that horseback riding uses a lot of muscles that you don’t really use for anything else.  It’s annoying to feel just how true that is.

Riding today also made me start wondering/re-dreaming about the goals I set back when I was pregnant:

a.) Ride Sadie First Level at the Hossmoor dressage show (May 7)

b.) Ride Lindy for the first time on her birthday (April 24)

These goals seemed kind of crazy all during February.  I’d pretty much given them up.  But now I’m wondering:  Can we do it?
